Generally, a serving of black tea has about a third of the caffeine as compared to a serving of coffee. Specifically, one serving of black tea has approximately 60-90 mg of caffeine, compared to 150-200 mg in a cup of coffee.
Green tea has significantly less caffeine, at 35-70 mg of caffeine per cup, and white tea only 30-55 mg per cup. All our herbal teas and health blends are caffeine-free. Pu-erh has similar caffeine content to black tea. Yerba Mate contains a similar chemical to caffeine, called "matteine." See our FAQ about Yerba Mate for more information.
Caffeine levels in your tea are affected by how much tea you are using, water temperature, and steeping time. The stronger your tea is, the more caffeine you have extracted into your cup.
Interestingly, you can remove up to 80% of the caffeine from your tea by simply rinsing the leaves for 30 seconds before steeping your tea. If you brew a second cup with the same tea leaves, the caffeine is also greatly reduced.
